Don't Let Days Gone By Be Bygone Days, Roadside Attraction, North of Moab, Utah - 18x24 Digital Photo Painting : Gone to Look for America - Patrick Alan Swigart © 2009 USA

Found: Coming out of the desert after a couple of days, I came to the crossroads. Stopped for a cup of coffee and an ice cream bar at a roadside store and RV/trailer park. I followed this little trail to lean up against the outcrop in the shade. These "teepees" are common attractions in the west. There is a shell gas station over to the right, irises in the foreground with sprinkler heads right here. I know, you wouldn't have noticed all this if I had said something. Why spoil it?

But that's what I was thinking about as I sat here. We love the days gone by in America but there are real Native American Indian People with real tipis and, granted, they are not usually found by the roadside with coffee to go, and ice cream bars. I'm amazed at how many Americans are familiar with all the sports teams symbols of Native America in our commercial endeavors, yet don't know a single one of these Americans, personally.

So as a wish and a prayer, I think, "Please don't let these things become bygone days." May these peoples and their cultures thrive and inform us all, as do the many other cultures to be found here in this great land.

This is no Edward S. Curtis shot but the feeling was still there in my mind as I took my brief respite.

“Thrift store treasures...”

I spent my lunch break today on a mission to finally acquire a lamp for my nightstand. I’d been searching stores online for one, but only to find out a teeny tiny table lamp is TWENTY BUCKS! Um... yeah... no! I’m soooOOOO not paying $20 for a friggin’ tiny table lamp. Instead, I decided to venture over to the thrift store near my job b/c well... I luuuuuuurve a good thrift store find!

And guess what?! I DID find one! AND... it was only $5! woohoo! Doing my happy dance! *oh... there’s also a return policy if it doesn’t work... niiiiice. Yes, the lamp’s a liiiiiittle girly and yes, it’s probably meant for a tweener’s bedroom, but... c’mon... those dangly beady tassles and that pink shade were calling out to me. I had to buy it! hehe

So... Not oooooonly did I score this sweetass lamp, but I ALSO got a mortar/pestle combo (been wanting to get one for the Mrs. so she can grind her own spices like she likes too!) for only $2!!! AND a ‘learn how to paint’ book that even comes with paint, brushes, instruction book, etc.... for only $3!!!!

Aaaaaaaaaah! I’m totally a happy camper right now! *and I’m actually uploading my 365 shot ON the same day I took it! Yeah... I know... you’re impressed... ;-) lol

Space Art: How to Draw and Paint Planets, Moons, and Landscapes of Alien Worlds

Space... the final art frontier... What is it like to walk through an alien world? Artists have been imagining otherworldly landscapes for hundreds of years—but only in the past few decades have we started to see what other planets and moons really look like. These exciting scientific discoveries have led to ever more "realistic" space art. Space Art shows artists how to capture and create these partly real, partly imagined vistas by combining the latest facts with traditional landscape drawing. Put the two together and the results are memorable, dreamlike, haunting. Author Michael Carroll, one of the country's most distinguished astronomical artists, explains how to use washes and texturing, how to paint water and ice, rocks and geological formations, craters and alien skies. Linear and atmospheric perspective, color, composition, color, value, and shading are also covered as they relate to showing otherworldly landscapes. Fourteen paintings, building in complexity, are presented step-by-step, accompanied by NASA photos and the author’s own photos of mysterious landscapes closer to home: Death Valley, Iceland, Alaska. For everyone who has ever wanted to travel to far-off worlds... or just show what they’re imagining... Space Art is a rocket to the stars.
